How To Apply For Medicare After Age 65 During Coronavirus

Because of the Coronavirus, many people who are past age 65 with health insurance through their employer are suddenly needing to enroll in full Medicare due to a loss of their employer health insurance.

This has been made more difficult by the fact that all Social Security offices, the place you would ordinarily go to enroll in Medicare in this situation, are currently closed.

The following are the steps you need to take to enroll in full Medicare because of a loss of employer coverage.

  1. You will need to have your employer complete Employer Form CMS-L564E. This form will provide details of when you have had employer coverage and, most importantly, when it is ending. You can download this form by clicking here.
  2. You will also need to complete CMS 40B-E Medicare Part B Enrollment Form. This is the form through which you will apply for Medicare Part B.
  3. You will then need to call Social Security at 1(800) 772-1213. You will be able to enroll in Medicare Part B – and Part A if you do not already have Medicare Part A – over the phone. You will be given instructions on where to fax or mail your completed Employer Form CMS-L564E and CMS 40B-E Medicare Part B Enrollment Form. Obviously, your wait time may be long but this is the only way to enroll in Medicare due to a loss of employer coverage at this time.
  4. You should receive your new Medicare card in the mail in 2-3 weeks. If you already have Medicare Part A, the Medicare number on the card you already have is the same number you will have going forward.
  5. After around a week, you should be able to get a digital copy of your Medicare card by going to mymedicare.gov, and register for online access to your Medicare account. Once you do this you will be able to download a pdf version of your Medicare card showing both Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B.
  6. You will also need to enroll in a Medicare Supplement and Medicare Part D drug plan. You can do this by contacting us per the directions below.
